Revolutionary War

1771–1783
The Revolution in North Carolina was shaped by independence and division. Patriots and Loyalists lived side by side as the war tore through communities, farms, and towns. Enslaved people and Native nations navigated the conflict in pursuit of freedom, survival, or autonomy. Independence came at a lasting cost.

Antebellum

1784–1861
Antebellum North Carolina was shaped by agriculture, slavery, and deep regional divides. Wealth and power were concentrated among elites as debates over slavery and states’ rights intensified. By the 1850s, the state was deeply divided and moving toward civil war.

Civil War

1861-1865
Reluctantly joining the Confederacy, North Carolina became a major center of Civil War activity and supplied more soldiers than any other Confederate state. Shortages, destruction, dissent, and emancipation reshaped life at home. By 1865, the state faced defeat and the difficult work of rebuilding.
